Delve into a fresh perspective on North American history during the Antebellum period, as seen through the eyes of the renowned British statesman, the 14th Earl of Derby. This amazing man’s journey across the United States and Canada in the early 19th century gave him a unique perspective that helped to form one of the leading visionaries and reformers of the Victorian age. What Lord Derby saw and experienced on these travels had a huge impact on his later ministries as chief secretary to Ireland, colonial secretary, and three-times prime minister to Queen Victoria. This lecture accompanies the 2025 publication of the second volume of the 14th Earl’s recently discovered travel journals by Caroline, the current Countess of Derby. The profound insights in his journals uncover new layers of complexity and nuance, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the past and its lasting impact on the present.

Caroline, Countess of Derby worked for the Royal Collection as an assistant curator and exhibitions assistant to the surveyor of the late Queen’s Pictures. Lady Derby has spent the past 30 years working on the restoration of Knowsley Hall, the ancestral seat of the Derby family. Her myriad experiences have convinced her of the ability of education to change lives, which led to the 2023 launch of her podcast that focuses on the power of studying history and sharing stories.
