Jewish Americans participated in the struggle for American independence in a variety of ways. From merchants and soldiers to community leaders and financiers, Jewish Patriots contributed to the revolutionary cause while navigating questions of loyalty, religious freedom, and their place in a new nation.
This lecture explores the experiences of Jewish men and women during the American Revolution, highlighting both well-known figures and lesser-known individuals. We’ll consider where Jewish communities were located, how they responded to the Revolution, and the ways Jewish Patriots supported the cause on the battlefield and on the home front.
Along the way, we’ll discuss several record sets, demonstrating how they can reveal not only what our ancestors did, but also the communities and families that shaped their experiences of the Revolution.
