The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States (RD600), with an addendum and coda (to the 2004 edition) of some 50 pages, was published two weeks ago, at the end of March or beginning of April. The addendum covers 19 new immigrants of royal descent (RD), offers “improved” lines for 18 more, “lowers” the lines of two and probably eight, and disproves the line of one immigrant, probably four, and possibly eight. Colonial immigrants whose progeny—in the thousands or millions—includes over ten notable descendants are Mrs. Elizabeth Bullock Clement(s) and Mrs. Judith Knapp Hubbard of Mass. (both developed by Leslie Mahler); Mrs. Dorothy Beresford Brodnax (developed by Douglas Richardson), Mrs. Abigail Smith Burwell, and Mrs. Frances Baldwin Townshend Jones Williams of Va. (the last two developed by John Anderson Brayton); and James Blount of N.C. (the work of several scholars, brought to my attention by Nathaniel Lane Taylor). Of these, Mrs. Clement(s) and Mrs. Brodnax are ancestors of the two presidents Bush. Mrs. Clement(s) is also an ancestress of Sir Winston Churchill, and Mrs. Abigail Smith Burwell is an ancestress of the two presidents Harrison. On p. 844, I listed 25 major historical figures who appear in the addendum and coda. This short list tantalizingly suggests the scope of my recent endeavors, as regards geography, century, and social class especially. Below I offer a list of 300 notable historical figures treated in the main text of the 2004 and 2006 editions. I do so in part to avoid listing a sample of these names in each of my “infamous” long book inscriptions/autographs. Listing only 15—five percent—of these figures suggests the incredible range of this list and the fame of most of the persons listed below. The 15 most extraordinary figures I would choose are Lucretia Borgia, Wernher von Braun, Hernan(do) Cortés, Charles Darwin, Sigmund Freud, Genghis Khan, Queen Geraldine of the Albanians, Audrey Hepburn, Lafayette, Norman Mailer, Karl Marx, Napoleon I, Rubens, the Marquis de Sade, and von Steuben.
