About NEHGS Publications

History of Publications

The history of the publications of New England Historic Genealogical Society is the history of the institution itself. From its inception, American Ancestors has sought to produce and share the very best in genealogical research. From scholarly articles to introductory research guides, our publications have appealed to and assisted researchers of all levels. In the early years our interest was solely on New England, but over the past several decades we have expanded our focus well beyond the region’s borders. Today our scholarship, old and new, is offered in an unprecedented variety of accessible formats.

The Register

American Ancestors set the standard for American genealogical writing in 1847 with  the first issue of its quarterly journal, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. The founding members intended to preserve important genealogical documents and materials, and to make this information widely available. The Register contains previously unpublished historical and genealogical material, including transcriptions of source material and short genealogies.

Mayflower Descendant was published in 1899 by the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, and has since become a major resource for research on families of the Mayflower and early southeastern Massachusetts. Longstanding features include record abstracts, English and Dutch origins, and serial published genealogies. Recent articles include notable Mayflower descendants, profiles of descendants who also have Native American or African American heritage, and research using DNA testing as genealogical evidence.
